DESCRIPTION:Karst regions are important repositories of geologic informatio
 n\, as caves and fissures can protect sediments from erosive forces that r
 emove surficial sediments. Within karst features and their associated depo
 sits\, animal remains are occasionally preserved as fossils. In regions do
 minated by erosion\, karst can be critically important for preserving the 
 paleontological record.\n\nThis is the case in Tennessee\, where most bedr
 ock is too old or of the wrong type to preserve vertebrate fossils. Becaus
 e of this\, vertebrate paleontology in the state of Tennessee is largely r
 estricted to caves and other karst features. Paleontological inventories o
 f caves in northeast Tennessee have revealed an abundance of Ice Age (Plei
 stocene) and early Holocene fossils. These discoveries have been found wit
 h the help of a new technique using ultraviolet (UV) light.\n\nContinued p
 aleontological investigation of the caves and karst regions of Tennessee r
 equire the cooperation of private landowners and project cavers.
