DESCRIPTION:There is a strong need for proficient and interested surveyors
to join projects\, but the learning curve and pressure to make trips count
can detract from positive learning environments for new surveyors to gain
necessary skills. Furthermore\, the time required to learn and develop pr
oficiency on sketch often hinders new cavers from learning this skill. Eve
n experienced surveyors remain intimidated by taking on this role.\n\nBuil
ding an ongoing project through a local grotto can develop and train new s
urveyors in a low-pressure environment. A local cave with accessible passa
ges and low technical requirements was used to reduce pressure and time sp
ent reaching objectives\, allowing maximum time surveying. Recurring Intro
ductory Classes were held to teach large groups about core concepts while
monthly trips were used to build hands on experience in smaller groups. Pa
rticipants were encouraged to rotate through all roles\, especially sketch
ing.\n\nThrough this deliberate approach in an environment focused on lear
ning\, the Greater Cincinnati Grotto was successful in developing 53 indiv
idual surveyors and sketchers. Additionally\, a resurveyed map was produce
d for a popular local cave through collaborative\, open-source cartography
efforts. We'll share what approaches worked and where this method can be
improved for others interested in developing surveyors in their local area
 s.
