There is a strong need for proficient and interested surveyors to join projects, but the learning curve and pressure to make trips count can detract from positive learning environments for new surveyors to gain necessary skills. Furthermore, the time required to learn and develop proficiency on sketch often hinders new cavers from learning this skill. Even experienced surveyors remain intimidated by taking on this role.
Building an ongoing project through a local grotto can develop and train new surveyors in a low-pressure environment. A local cave with accessible passages and low technical requirements was used to reduce pressure and time spent reaching objectives, allowing maximum time surveying. Recurring Introductory Classes were held to teach large groups about core concepts while monthly trips were used to build hands on experience in smaller groups. Participants were encouraged to rotate through all roles, especially sketching.
Through this deliberate approach in an environment focused on learning, the Greater Cincinnati Grotto was successful in developing 53 individual surveyors and sketchers. Additionally, a resurveyed map was produced for a popular local cave through collaborative, open-source cartography efforts. We'll share what approaches worked and where this method can be improved for others interested in developing surveyors in their local areas.
