Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park is a protected area in north-central Vietnam, which borders the recently created Hin Namno Reserve in Laos. Characterized by mountains, tropical forests and underground rivers, this national park is world-famous for its ancient limestone karsts and vast network of caves. The Park was listed in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2003 as one of the most outstanding and intact limestone karst landscapes and ecosystems in the world. With this recognition has come tourism, and the tourist economy has transformed the village of Phong Nha from primarily an agricultural village into a major world travel destination. The National Park and the companies who provide services within the National Park are strongly committed to sustainable tourism and responsible stewardship. Even so, there are both challenges and opportunities. Here we will discuss both and attempt to provide a model of sustainable economic and ecologic-minded development for the world.
