DESCRIPTION:During Spring Break 2025\, members of the Aggie Grotto were inv
 olved in a cave rescue incident in Wind-Hicks Cave\, managed by the Bureau
  of Land Management Carlsbad Field Office. While navigating a steep\, appr
 oximately 45-degree slope with a five-foot undercut\, a participant (refer
 red to here as "Aggie") slipped and fell roughly 15 feet into a vertical d
 rop\, resulting in a situation where self-exit was no longer possible.\n\n
 The Carlsbad Fire Department served as the primary responder\, coordinatin
 g a successful operation that resulted in the patient's safe extraction. T
 his presentation outlines the incident\, response actions\, and the practi
 cal factors that contributed to a positive outcome in a challenging enviro
 nment.\n\nMore importantly\, this session addresses what followed. For col
 lege grottos\, which often navigate issues of reputation\, rapid member tu
 rnover\, and evolving leadership\, how incidents are interpreted and commu
 nicated can shape their long-term standing within the caving community. Th
 is talk explores the balance between accountability and advocacy\, the imp
 ortance of accurate representation\, and the ethical considerations involv
 ed in discussing recent rescues\, including respect for participants and m
 edical privacy.\n\nThe Aggie Grotto uses this experience to highlight its 
 ongoing shift toward conservative decision-making\, structured risk manage
 ment\, and a culture of reflection and improvement in safe caving practice
 s. Attendees will gain perspective on how organizations can respond effect
 ively in the field while also navigating the complexities of community per
 ception\, ensuring that lessons learned are shared constructively and resp
 onsibly.
