NSS Convention 2026

During Spring Break 2025, members of the Aggie Grotto were involved in a cave rescue incident in Wind-Hicks Cave, managed by the Bureau of Land Management Carlsbad Field Office. While navigating a steep, approximately 45-degree slope with a five-foot undercut, a participant (referred to here as "Aggie") slipped and fell roughly 15 feet into a vertical drop, resulting in a situation where self-exit was no longer possible.

The Carlsbad Fire Department served as the primary responder, coordinating a successful operation that resulted in the patient's safe extraction. This presentation outlines the incident, response actions, and the practical factors that contributed to a positive outcome in a challenging environment.

More importantly, this session addresses what followed. For college grottos, which often navigate issues of reputation, rapid member turnover, and evolving leadership, how incidents are interpreted and communicated can shape their long-term standing within the caving community. This talk explores the balance between accountability and advocacy, the importance of accurate representation, and the ethical considerations involved in discussing recent rescues, including respect for participants and medical privacy.

The Aggie Grotto uses this experience to highlight its ongoing shift toward conservative decision-making, structured risk management, and a culture of reflection and improvement in safe caving practices. Attendees will gain perspective on how organizations can respond effectively in the field while also navigating the complexities of community perception, ensuring that lessons learned are shared constructively and responsibly.
