NSS Convention 2026

The caves of the Huautla de Jimenez, Oaxaca, Mexico area were discovered by NSS members in the mid-1960s. Since then, there have been speleological expeditions most years. Besides exploration and mapping, studies have been done in many disciplines and over 200 articles and two books have been published. Prior to this year's PESH expedition, the main cave, Sistema Huautla, was 1560m (5,118 ft.) deep – the deepest in the Americas, and 101.4 km (63 miles) long – the 28th longest known cave in the world. It has 30 entrances and more deep routes than any other cave. There have been nearly 500 project participants 1965 to 2026. Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla (PESH) is an official NSS Project. Two exploration books: Beyond the Deep and Huautla: Thirty Years in One of the World's Deepest Caves have been published, and chapters in all three editions of Encyclopedia of Caves. The presentation will be about the results of the 2026 expedition.
