DESCRIPTION:Ellen Trautner is a cave specialist employed by federal land ma
nagement agencies to manage and protect cave resources on public land. She
wrote an article for Philanthropic Educational Organization Record that d
etailed her recruitment of small\, thin female cavers to access and survey
a portion of Carlsbad Caverns that could be reached only by a very small
opening. She commented\, "It felt great to be an inspiration to other aspi
ring cavers and show them what a team of women can accomplish working toge
ther." After assisting a Girl Scout troop in a cave formation repair proje
ct\, Trautner said\, "I was able to introduce a group of young women to ca
ving and got the satisfaction of doing a service project with others." Tra
utner is unable to attend the "Cultures in Caving" session in person but h
as given her permission for discussion of the article.
