Discussion of “Empowering Women Through Cave Exploration and Conservation”
, 102

Ellen Trautner is a cave specialist employed by federal land management agencies to manage and protect cave resources on public land. She wrote an article for Philanthropic Educational Organization Record that detailed her recruitment of small, thin female cavers to access and survey a portion of Carlsbad Caverns that could be reached only by a very small opening. She commented, "It felt great to be an inspiration to other aspiring cavers and show them what a team of women can accomplish working together." After assisting a Girl Scout troop in a cave formation repair project, Trautner said, "I was able to introduce a group of young women to caving and got the satisfaction of doing a service project with others." Trautner is unable to attend the "Cultures in Caving" session in person but has given her permission for discussion of the article.
