DESCRIPTION:In 1866 John Proctor & John O'Shaughnessy engaged Charles Walda
ck\, a well-known Cincinnati photographer of cartes de visite and stereogr
aphs\, to take pictures of Mammoth Cave. Forty-two stereoviews were publis
hed by the New York Company of E & H. T. Anthony. In addition to the Antho
ny views\, other views were published by Charles Waldack and Proctor & O'S
haughnessy.\n\nFive of these images in the author's collection do not appe
ar in the 42-view Anthony set. A third set of seven unpublished views\, fr
om an unknown source\, have larger-size images showing more of Waldack's o
riginal glass plates. All of the non-Anthony views have separate chips for
each side stereoview. On the Anthony cards\, both sides of the image are
on a single photograph. The Anthony Cards were published until 1872 and sh
ow a variety of styles over time.\n\nWaldack took two trips to Mammoth Cav
e which he described in two letters sent to The Philadelphia Photographer
in July and December of 1866. Waldack never returned to the cave\, but too
k many additional stereo views of Cincinnati and its suburbs.
