DESCRIPTION:The standard histories of geology (e.g.\, Adams\, Geikie\, Merr
 ill\, Von Zittel) do not say much about caves. Yet caves are deeply intert
 wined with the development of geology. Caves served as natural laboratorie
 s where key ideas about Earth processes\, time\, and evidence were first e
 xplored. Long before geology emerged as a formal science\, caves occupied 
 a central place in myth\, philosophy\, and early natural inquiry. Ancient 
 and medieval thinkers interpreted them as entrances to the underworld or s
 ources of mysterious forces\, while early modern scholars began to questio
 n their origins\, proposing explanations for subterranean water flow\, min
 eral growth\, and Earth structure. These early investigations helped shift
  thinking from supernatural causes toward natural processes.\n\nDuring the
  Enlightenment\, caves became critical evidence for emerging geological th
 eories. Observations of speleothems and sediment layers supported the idea
  that slow\, continuous processes shape the Earth over vast timescales\, r
 einforcing early concepts of deep time and uniformitarianism. Caves also p
 rovided stratified records that allowed geologists to reconstruct sequence
 s of environmental change.\n\nIn the 19th century\, caves played a pivotal
  role in paleontology and Quaternary geology. Fossil assemblages within ca
 ves demonstrated extinction\, human antiquity\, and the coexistence of hum
 ans with now-extinct animals.\n\nWith the rise of modern geology\, caves b
 ecame essential to understanding karst processes\, groundwater systems\, a
 nd landscape evolution. Today\, they are among the most precise archives o
 f past climate\, preserving high-resolution records of environmental chang
 e. Across all periods\, caves have shaped geological thinking\, making the
 m foundational to the evolution of geology itself.
